The above listed User Group Council met at dinner Saturday evening, the last day of Mac World. ALL attending were asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement for the purpose of keeping any confidential information from leaving the discussion area. Sunday morning we met as an official council and spent the entire day from 8 AM to 5 PM in discussion of User Group needs and objectives. It didn't take long for the User Group leaders to understand that our thoughts and needs were parallel and only needed Ellen Leanse's orchestration to organize the council's thoughts into objectives. I don't imply that Ellen gave direction 'from Apple' but rather as a team leader, her role was helping to clarify and give visibility to our own thoughts and suggestions.

MONDAY... USER GROUPS MEET APPLE
NOTE: Monday started off at 8 AM on the 34th floor of the Freemont Center in downtown San Francisco, with a view of the bay area through large windows. The User Group Council was set up as a panel facing 35 of Apple's top executives (listed below), two TV cameras, a sound crew and all of the lights and 'heat' that go with this kind of a production. The day was about a week long (it seemed). With the exception of two short breaks and a short lunch, it was wall to wall business discussion until 5 PM.
NOTE2: At the end of the Sunday (1st day) meeting, a spokesman for the User Group Advisory Council, Dr Franklin Tessler, was chosen to speak for the Group in the opening statement Monday morning. The statement was a declaration of User Group needs as defined by the council.

NOTE: "THE MACINTOSH MENTALITY"
Objectively I would have to say that Apple listened and was attentive to what the User Groups had to say. Subjectively, I would have to qualify their listening ability as it pertained to other than to the Macintosh product. I say this because I believe that I was the ONLY person on the Advisory Council that did not at least have access to a Mac. In fact most of the council did not have access to an Apple // family product, and were even bored about conversation about them. Being the 'loner', I posed the question several times to the Apple Council about the use of Macs and the Mac mentality to the exclusivity of the Apple // family. Every time I said anything about ignoring the Apple //, (a sensitive subject and Apple is defensive about it) there was robust denial as the question fell on 'MacEars' obviously wanting the deafening silence to pass so that the conversation could get back to those stimulating conversations about the Mac product (their opinion, not mine). I overheard one of the Apple people say that they wish they could have a GS on their desk but Apple was just a sea of Macs. I think that says it for us Apple // owners. The Macs are cloning the Apples // family so not one has to concern themselves with the problem. Unofficially I would have to say, and this is pure supposition, and my own opinion, but the rumor that the GS was stifled so as not to compete and muddle the Mac market, has to be true. They just can't hide it. I say that as I am typing this on my GS. For example, during the hardware discussion and again during the software discussion, I mentioned the fact that the included introductory disk, "A Tour Of The Apple II GS" was a complete waste and disappointment, and other than propping up a short table leg, the disk was garbage. With all the capabilities of the II GS... and they pick that program to include with the II GS as a demo???" Scott Kanaster spoke up and said he was sorry about that and that he didn't like the disk either. I said laughingly to Scott, "You think your sorry.... think how I feel, I'm the one that spent the money." The point was made and understood.
The meetings were exhausting but enjoyable. I learned a lot! Monday at 5PM, as it was all over, I felt as if I was completely drained of my life blood but I would do it again in a heart beat. It was exciting and I am thrilled to have been involved. It was an experience that can only happen to a few. I am thankful I was chosen.
At night, Ellen and her crew would take us on the town and get our spirits back again. I and several of the other Group Leaders chose to pay the additional fees to take our spouses. Ellen made sure they were included in the evening activities, during the day, while we were 'captured', they shopped and traveled the stores in San Francisco.... Argghhhh... that can be a disaster with stores like Esprit, Gucci, Saks, Macy's, and Nieman Marcus, but they all really had fun.
Although Ellen made the whole thing go... she has a crew of really... I mean "REALLY!" great people around her. Cathy Hoolihan and Phyllis Farnam are two (very attractive) ladies that never let a detail fall short. Anything and everything was taken care of. I offer a very, VERY sincere thanks to a crew of ladies that did more than their job called for.
Both Sunday and Saturday were voice taped and I will be sent a transcript of the entire meeting. As far as non-confidential information goes, I would be happy to share any part of that transcript with you. We will hope it arrives on magnetic media as a text file and not ONLY on paper or downloadable via telecommunications. That was another problem that was addressed and hopefully corrected. As mentioned, Monday, the second day was video taped and an abstracted version (the entire taped session was 8 hours) was promised for use at User Group meetings.
